HRTICN's Mission
The Hampton Roads Trauma Informed Community Network (HRTICN) exists to promote understanding of how trauma affects individuals and communities, and to advocate practices that help all people reach their full potential.
What is trauma?
Trauma is any experience that causes you to feel intensely threatened. Exposure to violence, the death of a loved one, loss of a job, divorce, physical or emotional abuse. Even a natural disaster. These experiences can put you at risk for emotional, physical and behavioral challenges.
Why care?
No one is immune to trauma. According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 70% of adults in the U.S. have experienced at least one traumatic event. More than two thirds of children report at least one traumatic event by age 16. Trauma can contribute to substance abuse, domestic violence, child abuse, eating disorders, depression, and anxiety. The result is a public health crisis taking a financial and human toll on our society.
How do we respond?
HRTICN is where we work collaboratively to improve our systems of care to empower individuals affected by trauma. By increasing awareness and advocacy we move our families, communities and workplaces toward healing, wellness and prosperity.

Values and Results
HRTICN addresses the impacts of family violence, child abuse, neglect, and poverty in Hampton Roads. We ensure services and education occur in environments built around safety, trust, transparency, peer support, collaboration and mutuality, empowerment, voice and choice, and the recognition of cultural, historical, and gender issues.
HRTICN will increase awareness of the presence, prevalence, and impact of traumatic stress; facilitate the adoption of trauma-informed policies and practices among care providers; and develop a cross-sector collaborative to create a trauma-responsive community of providers.
