Safe at Home
A Good Idea
Description
The Safe at Home program works with low-income elderly homeowners to make improvements in their homes in order to avoid falls, prevent nursing home placement, and promote safe and comfortable aging. Falls are the leading cause of injury and disability in older adults, and many of these falls are attributed to hazards in the home. Safe at Home makes modifications and accessibility improvements free of charge. Modifications might include adding toilet and shower assist units, building wheelchair ramps, installing handrails, lever-operated door handles, and faucets, lowering sinks, laying anti-skid stairway treads, and improving lighting.

Results / Accomplishments
In 2006, over 13,000 fall prevention modifications had been completed, and as of 2007, an estimated 20,000 falls had been prevented.
