4 Year-Olds Served by the Virginia Preschool Initiative

Select a County
Measurement Period: 2019

This indicator shows four-year-olds served by the Virginia Preschool Initiative. Totals include full-time and part-time programs by public, private for-profit and private non-profit providers.

Why is this important?

The Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) is a state-funded program that serves at-risk 4 year-olds and is designed for families who might not otherwise be able to access quality early childhood education opportunities. Using research-based methods, this program fosters the development of literacy and math skills and builds social-emotional foundations for lifetime learning.

Early childhood education has many benefits for children and their communities. Children who have access to high-quality education at a young age are more likely to be behaviorally and academically prepared for grades K-12. Early preparation can lead to greater success for students in the form of higher test scores and graduation rates, as well as better preparation for the workforce. In addition, an early investment in education can help lower community spending on remedial education, welfare use, and criminal justice costs.
