San Francisco Women Against Rape (SFWAR) Counseling Programs

A Good Idea

Description

The goal of San Francisco Women Against Rape (SFWAR) Counseling Programs is to provide resources and support to individuals and communities in San Francisco that are responding to or healing from sexual violence. SFWAR is a volunteer-based organization that has provided rape crisis services for nearly 40 years.

SFWAR has many components. Certified counselors are available on a 24-hour crisis line to offer crisis counseling and community referrals. The Community Initiatives Program provides prevention education through various presentations, festivals, and community events and supports communities in mobilizing to confront and end rape.

The program also has a case management/advocacy component, where advocates act as liaisons between survivors and medical, legal, and social systems. Advocates also provide community resources and offer accompaniments to medical appointments and legal proceedings, and meet with social service providers. The Counseling Program provides free and confidential in-person peer counseling to survivors and their friends and family members.
