Income Inequality

Select a County
Measurement Period: 2018-2022
This indicator shows the Gini Index of Income Inequality value. The Gini coefficient is commonly used as a measure of income inequality. The range of the coefficient is between 0 and 1, whereby 0 denotes complete equality in a population (every person receives the same income) and 1 denotes complete inequality (one person has all the wealth in the region).

Why is this important?

While it is long established that socioeconomic status and personal income are strongly correlated with an individual's health status, newer studies show that the level of economic inequality in a community is a strong predictor of population level health. Moreover, there is growing evidence that relative wealth influences health outcomes as much or more than the absolute level of wealth an individual possesses. Therefore, the Gini coefficient for a community has implications for both public health and economic interventions.
